As part of the preparations for UNOC3, organised jointly by the governments of France and Costa Rica, EcoCitizen was invited to take part in the Ocean Accounts Exchange held in Costa Rica. Our CEO Adriana González was accompanied by María Paula Salazar, a trainee engineer and part of the EcoCitizen team in Costa Rica, at the Ocean Accounts Exchange: Building a Blueprint for Action event in Costa Rica organised by the Global Ocean Accounting Partnership (GOAP). The event, held in San José from 24 to 27 March 2025, aimed to strengthen new alliances in the field of environmental economics in oceanic and marine ecosystems, within the framework of promoting sustainable governance.

During the sessions, the discussion revolved around the potential of ocean accounting to align with the needs of the financial sector and to direct investment towards marine and coastal conservation. In the case of Costa Rica, the importance of creating a modular approach to obtain quality data systems over time was emphasised, considering the development of sustainable strategies based on reliable data.
In this context, EcoCitizen emphasised the importance of a broad dialogue to recognise the value of involving various stakeholders, such as fishing communities, native and indigenous peoples, scientists, as well as non-governmental organisations and governments.
Likewise, the EcoCitizen team actively participated in the collaborative work spaces with the aim of exchanging ideas. These spaces allowed for the discussion of projects and perspectives of representatives from different regions of the world, as well as the formation of work teams to develop a roadmap aimed at the creation of comprehensive ocean accounts by 2030.
During the event, an important step was taken towards strengthening ocean governance with the signing of a joint declaration by eight countries and a regional convention to advance ocean environmental accounting.

We would like to thank the Global Ocean Accounting Partnership (GOAP) for the invitation, the excellent organisation, and the governments of Costa Rica and the United Kingdom for making the event possible.
