An urgent call to action on World Environment Day

5th June 2025. As we commemorate World Environment Day today, we are alarmed but still optimistic. We must face the stark reality of climate collapse, nature and biodiversity loss, and growing desertification. These crises hit the most vulnerable hardest, especially in the Global South, affecting women, indigenous communities, people with disabilities, the elderly, and children.

We urge governments to present more ambitious and gender- responsive Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to deal with these urgent challenges.

We urge the private sector, especially banking and finance, to redirect capital toward sustainable projects like renewable energy and restorative, agroecological farming while eliminating investments in fossil fuels and harmful industries. We also need to see the private sector, especially finance and banking, integrate climate and environmental risks into their decision-making processes and prioritise funding for vulnerable communities, particularly in the Global South.

The private sector must align their strategies with global frameworks like the UNFCCC Paris Agreement to ensure the global response to the climate and environmental crises.

This year, marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, we must act decisively.

We don’t have time, business as usual is not enough. We need all actors to be aligned to enable synergies between the Rio Conventions.

This will be the only way for a unified and effective response to the interconnected threats that threaten the conditions for life on earth to continue.
