Congratulations and THANK YOU Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change.
We truly celebrate the ICJ much-anticipated Advisory Opinion on climate change obligations.
The UN’s highest judicial body has said that countries have a clear LEGAL OBLIGATION under international law to ensure the protection of the climate system and other parts of the environment from anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases for States… for present and future generations!
For us this is a massive call to action… in times when we desperately need motivation and hope… and it is grounded in justice, equity, and science; with human rights at the centre, as well as customary law, and multilateral treaties like the Paris Agreement. Three cheers for due diligence, prevention of significant harm, and cooperation!
For what we are building with EcoCitizen… this opinion lifts our spirits in tough times.
We are committed to create positive social and ecological impacts in the world and we are growing a team of like-minded people who share values and want to see change. We believe and engage from a holistic vision: integrating science, policy, human rights, law, and real action to ensure that life on this planet can thrive.
This ruling is yet another example of stubbornly optimistic citizen power.
This ICJ opinion didn’t just come from a courtroom, or just judges and lawyers. It was young people… committed and dedicated, passionate young people from the Pacific. They convinced Small Island state leaders, politicians and diplomats who duly rose to the challenge and responded to their citizens.
We celebrate their vision, their passion, and we thank Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change for their persistence. Photo credit to them too!
Let’s turn this historic moment into MOMENTUM for a world of ecological citizenship. If you share our values: ethics, equity, a systems-thinking approach… and want to drive science, research, and real impact, reach out and help us build this new world.
