UN Biodiversity: From Cali to Rome

EcoCitizen’s CEO Adriana González represented the organization as a Science & Research Observer during the resumed COP16 on Biodiversity in Rome, hosted by the United Nations. The event brought together governments, organizations, and civil society to advance the implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), a landmark agreement to safeguard nature and biodiversity worldwide.

Following up on the Global Biodiversity Framework

On the opening day, discussions focused on the critical issues of resource mobilization, addressing implementation gaps, and ensuring effective monitoring of biodiversity commitments. EcoCitizen’s participation placed a spotlight on two key themes: the potential of technology development to serve nature, and the crucial role of women in international biodiversity and climate action.

Highlighting the Cali Fund

Day two of the conference celebrated the launch of the Cali Fund, an initiative designed to ensure fair and equitable benefit sharing from genetic resources while strengthening the inclusion of Indigenous peoples’ perspectives in UN Biodiversity decision-making. While the Fund marks a significant step forward, major challenges remain. Chief among them is securing the USD 200 billion per year needed to achieve the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework, along with establishing a fair and sustainable financing mechanism.

EcoCitizen partners with governments, multilateral institutions, NGOs and the private sector to deliver science-based advisory, complex multilateral engagement, and applied research in climate and nature. To discuss how our team can support your next project, contact us at: moien[at]ecocitizen.lu
