EcoCitizen’s Board Member and Senior Advisor Salvatore Coppola-Finegan participated in the Cambiamento climatico delle Nazioni Unite Subsidiary Bodies Meetings (SB62), held in Bonn, Germany, as part of the ongoing negotiations leading to COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Bridging Europe and Latin America for Climate Action
EcoCitizen engaged actively in building partnerships between Europe and Latin America to drive integrated climate–nature action. This work focused on advocating for urgent, science-based solutions, strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, and prioritizing the needs and voices of the Global South.
Key Negotiation Tracks
Throughout the intersessional meetings, Salvatore followed closely the discussions on:
Climate Finance, including debates on resource mobilization and equity.
The Just Transition Work Programme, particularly the intersections of finance, trade measures, and social justice.
Loss and Damage, a key area where climate-vulnerable countries continue to push for accountability and effective support.
Synergies among the Rio Conventions, exploring ways to integrate biodiversity, desertification, and climate agendas.
In addition to plenary sessions, Salvatore contributed to bilateral meetings with civil society, faith-based communities, and climate leaders from Latin America and beyond, analyzing challenges such as the extractive economic model in the region and its impact on the so-called “energy transition.”
Science, Policy, and Communities in Dialogue
Highlights of the week included Salvatore’s presentation to Mons. Juan Carlos Barreto (CELAM/Cáritas Colombiana) and representatives of the Catholic Church in Latin America, where he provided a technical appraisal of SB62 negotiations and strategies for amplifying the role of faith communities in climate governance. He also joined the Network of Catholic Climate and Environment Actors (NCCEA) and attended a side event on Climate Change and Migration, reinforcing the importance of linking climate policy to people’s lived realities.

Looking Toward COP30
As the meetings concluded, EcoCitizen echoed the call of UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell: “We need to go further, faster, and fairer.” Despite progress on just transition, major gaps remain—particularly on finance and the timely submission of NDCs.
Salvatore closed his participation with a strategic meeting alongside La Ruta del Clima, EcoCitizen’s partner in Central America, to advance community-driven climate action and resilience-building efforts in the region.
EcoCitizen’s presence at SB62 reaffirmed its mission to bridge science, policy, and communities in pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and effective climate governance system, as the world looks ahead to COP30 in Brazil.
